Captain Sensible: Solo & Beyond...

2011

Captain Sensible

Saturday 15 October - TChances, London

Comments: Captain Sensible was advertised as headling the Oxjam music event but apparently did not appear.  Advertising varied, showing both The Captain Sensible Band, and Captain Sensible and Monty Oxy Moron, so it is unclear just what was intended.

Saturday 18 December - Academy 3, Manchester

Set included: One Christmas Catalogue, Do Anything You Wanna Do.

Comments: Support to The Glitter Band. Also on the bill - Cranial Screwtop. Captain Sensible is known to have joined The Glitter Band on stage, so it is presumed that he sang lead vocals on 'Do You Want To Touch' and 'Leader of the Gang' as with previous gigs. Additionally, Dave Berk drummed for The Glitter Band because their drummer could not make the gig due to snow disruption.

Friday 17 December - Classic Grand, Glasgow

Comments: CANCELLED. Intended support to The Glitter Band. The show did not take place due to singer John Springate of The Glitter Band having a throat infection.

Thursday 16 December - Corporation, Sheffield

Monday 13 December - Chinnerys, Southend

Set included: New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Do Anything You Wanna Do, Gloria.

Comments: Intended support to The Glitter Band, but only Captain Sensible and band played due to singer John Springate of The Glitter Band having a throat infection. Captain wrote on his Facebook page "The Sensible band played a fun gig in Southend last night on our own (with Barry Masters guesting)". Apparently the Sensible band played for around 85 minutes, Barrie Masters of Eddie and the Hot Rods came on for the encore of 'Do Anything You Wanna Do' and 'Gloria' and then Captain did a couple of Glitter Band numbers.

Sunday 12 December - The Tunnel Club, Bristol

Set: A Sporting Life, Love Policeman, Home, It's Hard To Believe I'm Not, Life Up In The Stars, Brenda, Glad It's All Over, What D'ya Give The Man Who's Gotten Everything, Wot, Do Anything You Wanna Do, Happy Talk.

Groundhogs

Friday 20 August - Twinwood Arena, Clapham, Bedford (Rhythm Festival)

Comments: Captain Sensible, attending the event with The Damned, jammed 'Cherry Red' with The Groundhogs.

Captain Sensible

Saturday 7 August - Ascot Racecourse (Here and Now tour)

Set: included: Glad It's All Over, Wot, Happy Talk.

Comments: Captain Sensible fulfilled a commitment to play this event prior to going on to the Endorse It Festival, in Six Penny Handley, to play with The Damned. Only 3 numbers were played (and are thought to be as above - ie Captain Sensible is quoted as saying "I just played the 3 hits")... but the order is unknown. Others on the bill were - Belinda Carlisle, Midge Ure, The Christians, Johnny Hates Jazz, Cutting Crew, Boy George. It is believed that solo performers played with a 'house' band rather than their own musicians.

Dr Spacetoad & Friends

Sunday 7 February - Evening Star, Brighton

Set: unknown.

Comments: Free gig advertised as 'An Acoustic Audience With Dr Spacetoad & Friends'. Believed to have been limited participation from Captain Sensible during the evening, but known to have joined Dr Spacetoad for at least - 'My Old Mate The Coypu' and 'The Moon Is A Dandy'.

Saturday 6 February - The Brunswick, Brighton

Set: Time Machine, It's Not Unusual, Trying To Be Wierd, Tragic Nature, Carnival Town, Dorian Grey, Gone Too Far (This Time), Troubadour Of The 4th Dimension, Set The Controls, Dance Of The Toad.

Comments: Live recording made on the 5 February and actually broadcast on Radio Free Brighton on 6 February.

2009

Captain Sensible, Monty, Stu West, Dave Berk

Thursday 13 August - Hobgoblin, Brighton

Set: Neat Neat Neat, Antipope, Jet Boy Jet Girl, New Rose.

Comments: An intended appearance by the Sumerian Kings, in which Monty should have been playing... but the singer and saxaphone player didn't show up. Captain Sensible, Monty, Stu West and Dave Berk, were in attendance as they had been rehearsing in the area because Dave Berk was filling-in for Pinch at an upcoming show in the Czech Republic. Due to the non-appearance of the Sumerian Kings, a hastily arranged set was apparently knocked-up (soundchecking with 'New Rose' and 'Wait For The Blackout') and then the 4-piece played the above set to an audience of about 20-30 people.

Captain Sensible & Monty

Saturday 20 June - The Greenhouse, Hove

Set: A Nation Fit For Heroes, Arnold Layne, Happy Talk, Glad It's All Over, Astronomy Domine.

Comments: Benefit gig, organised by The Real Music Club, in aid of funeral costs for Slim Tide's daughter who died in a car crash. These are some of the comments posted on The Official Damned Message board by contributor Frozen Joe Ballet Boxer:

Arrived just in time for the first act, Jacki Windmill, who played Ruby Tuesday decitated to Alice. Jacki also played a song with Slim Tim Slide and a song with Judge Trev. A nice gentle start to the evening.

Next up was a good set by Judge Trev though there was a lot of chatting amongst the audience, not many people seemed to be paying him much attention.

Slim Tim Slide did a great set on his own including a brilliant guitar instrumental written for his daughter before she was born - a poignant moment. Slim Tim is a great slide blues player and held attention well.

Next up was Captain Stupidt whose name I've come across before but never heard or seen his stuff before. He's a tall, large bellied, ginger with a beard and pony-tail wearing a grubby ladies shirt and skirt with knee high socks and green tights, accessorised by two ladies bags and a notepad of some really good satirical poems including rewrites of Money (That's What I Want), Downtown (as Downturn), and Windmills of Your Mind. Completely mad but entertaining.

We were treated to the penultimate performance by the Polly Shang Kuan band who are soon to split up. They were a young female trio who made what can only be described as a sound collage.

Monty then took to the stage performing the track English Holiday from his Living My Life Backwards album with Captain Stupidt on vocals. Sadly that was all from Monty's repertoir but one Captain was changed for another and he and Sensible played a fantastic 5 song set including A Nation Fit For Heroes, Arnold Layne, Happy Talk (apparently not on the setlist, but it didn't take much encouragement for Sensible to start playing it!), Glad It's All Over (sadly interrupted half way thru by guitar problems), and a (inter)stellar version of Astronomy Domine. Another Captain, Barrington White from the Dr Spacetoad Experience, did some psychedelic ballroom dancing with Honking Stu from The Uncontrollables to this one.

Taking to the stage next was a young band called The Shoestrung who are a bluesy R 'n B rock band similar to early Stones. There was definately something very sixties about them and they were great. Great danceable songs, authentic sound, good stage presence - they got a lot of people up and dancing and having a great time - including Captain Sensible.

The night was closed by The Uncontrollables who I'd seen at Brighton's Komedia supporting The Damned back in December. They were joined by Captain Sensible on bass and as the set moved on members of the audience seemed to bring more and more instruments out. A brilliant version of Bo Diddleys' Mona got everyone dancing as did (She's A) Bad Motorcycle.

For 'Staring At The Rude Boys', Captain continued with lead guitar but relinquished vocals in favour of Henry Rollins.
