The Damned: Live Performances - 1986

The list of shows for 1986 should be considered as 'work in progress'.

Saturday 20 December 1986 - Klubfoot, Clarendon Hotel, London

Comments: See Naz Nomad & The Nightmares.

Friday 19 December 1986 - Klubfoot, Clarendon Hotel, London

Comments: See Naz Nomad & The Nightmares.

Saturday 22 November 1986 - Klubfoot, Clarendon Hotel, London

Comments: See Naz Nomad & The Nightmares.

Tuesday 18 November 1986 - Ulster Hall, Belfast

Set: unknown.

Comments: Irish dates originally intended for beginning of October but re-arranged. Original date (4 October) indicated that Blue In Heaven were due to support, so it is likely that they supported at this re-arranged show (as they are known to have supported at other re-arranged gigs). Gig confirmed as having taken place.

Sunday 16 November 1986 - The Savoy, Limerick

Set: unknown.

Comments: Irish dates originally intended for beginning of October but re-arranged. Support from Blue in Heaven.

Saturday 15 November 1986 - Hornas, Tralee

Set: unknown.

Comments: Irish dates originally intended for beginning of October but re-arranged. This gig confirmed as having taken place.

Friday 14 November 1986 - Top Hat, Dublin

Set: unknown.

Comments: Irish dates originally intended for beginning of October but re-arranged.

Wednesday 12 November 1986 - Hammersmith Odeon, London

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow Of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street Of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat. encore 2 - Love Song, Born To Kill, We Love You.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven.

Monday 10 November 1986 - Hammersmith Odeon, London

Comments: This date seems to have appeared on early advertising but appears to be erroneous.

Sunday 9 November 1986 - Hammersmith Palais, London

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow Of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street Of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore 2 - Love Song, Born To Kill, We Love You.

Comments: This additional London date added part way through the tour - so does not appear on some tour advertising of the time. Support was not from Blue in Heaven as per other dates, instead, support was from Restless. Damned fan Johnno was invited to the stage prior to 'Love Song'... he was supposedly celebrating his 100th Damned gig.

Saturday 8 November 1986 - Reading University

Set: unknown.

Friday 7 November 1986 - University of East Anglia, Norwich

Set: unknown.

Thursday 6 November 1986 - Gaumont, Ipswich

Set: possibly: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore(s) - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, Love Song, Disco Man, Pretty Vacant (?).

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven. This set is taken from a bootleg tape, however, Dave Vanian talks during the set about the new album "that unfortunately won't be out until November" and the last 3 songs are disjointed - it is possible that the tape is incorrectly labelled and / or it is a partial set with some tracks tacked on at the end.

Tuesday 4 November 1986 - Rock City, Nottingham

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat. encore 2 - Love Song, We Love You.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven.

Monday 3 November 1986 - Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone

Set: unknown.

Comments: A Facebook posting suggested that this gig took place - "I went to the Folkestone gig on the Anything our, the bloke next to me gobbed at Roman and he thought I had done it, he was looking daggers at me. I kept shouting out it wasn't me, but he looked like he wanted to kill me. Also, during the second song, some arsehole threw a pint at Dave, all over his leather jacket, he was not amused".

Sunday 2 November 1986 - Guildhall, Portsmouth

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore(s?) - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, Love Song, New Rose, We Love You.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven. 'Street of Dreams' finished the main set, but it is not known whether further numbers were played during a single or multiple encores.

Friday 31 October 1986 - Apollo, Oxford

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, In Dulce Decorum, Shadow Of Love, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street Of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat. encore 2 - Love Song, We Love You.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven. The above set is as listed in a review of the show in edition of the Damned's fanzine 'Flashmag', though whether the order in which 'In Dulce Decorum' and 'Shadow Of Love' were played was remembered correctly seems questionable (though obviously possible)... as normally they were played in the reverse order at other shows during this period.

Thursday 30 October 1986 - Cliffs Pavilion, Southend

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams, Plan 9 Channel 7, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat.

Comments: The tape that this set is extracted from does not make the encore numbers obvious, however, it appears that 'Plan 9 Channel 7' to 'Neat Neat Neat' may have been played together as a (single) encore.

Wednesday 29 October 1986 - Civic Hall, Guildford

Set: unknown.

Tuesday 28 October 1986 - Colston Hall, Bristol

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Disco Man. encore 2 - Love Song, Neat Neat Neat.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven.

Monday 27 October 1986 - Odeon, Birmingham

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, Love Song. encore 2 - We Love You.

Comments: Support from The Missing and Blue In Heaven.

Sunday 26 October 1986 - Ritzy's, Cardiff

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, Love Song. encore 2 - We Love You, Born To Kill.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven.

Friday 24 October 1986 - Civic Hall, Wolverhampton

Set: unknown.

Comments: Although Wolverhampton appeared in some tour lists and on tour t-shirts, in others that specified the actual venues it didn't. I had presumed, that though this show may have been originally planned, it was never actually a confirmed gig and did not take place. However, some advertising for the time has now been unearthed and gives this as The St Peter's Freshers Ball at The Civic Hall with support from Blue In Heaven. The fact that is was a Freshers Ball suggests that it may have been a closed event (ie for students only), which may be why it was not widely advertised as part of the tour. Therefore, it is now assumed that the show DID take place.

Thursday 23 October 1986 - City Hall, Sheffield

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat.

Comments: Spitting from the audience during 'In Dulce Decorum' resulted in the number being curtailed part way through. There was then a couple of minutes break before the band began again with 'Is It A Dream', and the short piece of 'Lovely Money' that normally linked the 2 songs on this tour was omitted in its entirety.

Wednesday 22 October 1986 - Keele

Comments: Although this location appeared in some tour lists and on tour t-shirts, in others that specified the actual venues it didn't. I presume, that though this gig may have been originally planned, it was never actually a confirmed show and did not take place.

Tuesday 21 October 1986 - Apollo, Manchester

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street Of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat. encore 2 - Love Song.

Comments: A gap in the tape that this set was taken from suggests that 'Love Song' was played as a second encore and hence this is the way it has been shown above - however, it is possible that 'Plan 9 Channel 7' to 'Love Song' were part of the same encore. Additionally, the way the tape ended means that it cannot be confirmed that 'love Song' definitely ended the performance that evening.

Monday 20 October 1986 - City Hall, Newcastle

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street Of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, Love Song. encore 2 - Looking At You, Lust For Life.

Comments: Support confirmed as having been Blue in Heaven.

Saturday 18 October 1986 - Barrowlands, Glasgow

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street Of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, Love Song. encore 2 - Looking At You, New Rose.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven and The Missing.

Friday 17 October 1986 - Dundee University

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street Of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, We Love You. encore 2 - Love Song, Born To Kill.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven.

Thursday 16 October 1986 - Capitol, Aberdeen

Set: unknown.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven.

Wednesday 15 October 1986 - Playhouse, Edinburgh

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore 2 - Love Song, Ignite.

Comments: Support from Blue in Heaven.

Monday 13 October 1986 - Royal Court, Liverpool

Set: Sanctum Sanctorum, Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore 1 - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat, Ignite. encore 2 - New Rose, Love Song.

Comments: Support from The Missing.

Sunday 12 October 1986 - The Guildhall, Preston

Set included: Wait For The Blackout, Psychomania, Anything, Shadow of Love, In Dulce Decorum, Lovely Money, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Restless, LA Woman, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams. encore - Plan 9 Channel 7, Neat Neat Neat.

Comments: Information for this set is taken from a bootleg recording, however, it cuts in part way through 'Wait For The Blackout', so it is assumed that the set actually began with 'Sanctum Sanctorum' as with other sets of this period. The show was curtailed during 'Neat Neat Neat' due to issues with the audience (there was certainly spitting going on during the gig) - a Facebook posting seems to confirm this, stating "Rat saw something he didn't like, dropped his sticks and walked off, followed by the rest of them".

Saturday 11 October 1986 - City Hall, Hull

August 1986 - unknown location

Set: Eloise [see comments].

Comments: The Damned appeared on the Granada TV programme 'Rock Around The Dock' on 29 August. During the programme they mimed to first 'Eloise' and later 'Anything' - however, 'Eloise' had been recorded live in the studio especially for the event (backed by a full orchestra).

Saturday 2 August 1986 - Turku, Finland (Ruis Rock Festival)

Set: Plan 9 Channel 7, Anything, Neat Neat Neat, Stranger On The Town, Is It A Dream, The Girl Goes Down, Wait For The Blackout, Limit Club, Shadow of Love, Restless, Smash It Up, Eloise, Street of Dreams, LA Woman, New Rose.

Friday 18 July 1986 - San Siro Stadium, Milan, Italy

Set included [see 'Comments' below]: Curtain Call, Wait For The Blackout, Grimly Fiendish, Stranger On The Town, Is It A Dream, Smash It Up, Limit Club, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Thanks For The Night, Love Song.

Comments: Support from Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Balaam And The Angel, Doctors And The Medics and The Mission. A short set played as part of the 'Milano Suono' festival. Although the show was intended for the Vigorelli Velodrome, the venue was apparently unavailable, meaning it was switched to the San Siro football stadium. 'Curtain Call' to 'Limit Club' are confirmed as having been played because they appear on a partial Milan radio broadcast taken at the time - however, commentary and an incomplete track mean that the running order cannot be verified. The remainder of items given for this set, 'New Rose' to 'Love Song', are from the memory of a contibutor to this site and may have appeared anywhere, in any order, within the set.

Saturday 12 July 1986 - Francis-Le Ble Stadium, Brest, France

Monday 21 April 1986 - (venue unknown), Osaka, Japan

Set: unknown.

Comments: Originally thought to have been a Silk Hall, Kyoto date, this was later found to have been a show in Osaka. Though the venue remains unknown at this time, The Festival Hall seems likely given the year and its capacity.

Monday 14 April 1986 - The Tivoli, Sydney, Australia

Set included: Eloise.

Comments: Support from Boom Crash opera. Show confirmed as having taken place by contributors to this website. Once such contributor stated 'I can assure you this show happened as I was there! It was at The Tivoli Nightclub, and whilst there wasn't a huge crowd, the gig went off awesomely and remains even now 30 years later as one of the most crazy and memorable gigs I've ever been to. This was definitely their last Australian gig for that tour, after touring both NZ and Australia during the first two weeks of April. It was a very appreciative crowd, and as it was their last gig they seemed to play encore after encore after encore... much more so than I'd ever seen before. In fact their gig only ended after Rat Scabies launched into a huge drum solo whereby he finally did destroy most of his drum skins in a true punk display rarely seen by those times in the mid 1980's.'

Saturday 12 April 1986 - The Venue, Melbourne, Australia

Set: unknown.

Comments: Supposedly, the last Australian show before departing Sydney for Tokyo on Tuesday 15 April according to an old tour itinary. However, plans must have changed because, contributors to this site have indicated that the show in Sydney on the 14th was also played.

Thursday 20 March 1986 - Rainbow Music Hall, Denver, Colorado

Set: unknown.

Comments: Denver was indicated on the world tour t-shirt for 1986, but whether the gig actually came to fruition or not remains unknown. However, an 'educated guess' can be made that it did happen, and that it was at the Rainbow Music Hall, because The Damned are known to have played this venue around '86. If this IS the correct show, then the support is believed to have been Augy Rocks & the Lipstick Gunfighters.

Wednesday 5 March 1986 - The Channel, Boston, Massachusettes

Set: Curtain Call, Shadow of Love, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, Grimly Fiendish, Stranger On The Town, Is It A Dream, Limit Club, Purple Haze, Smash It Up, I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night), Looking At You, Eloise, Lust For Life, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat, You're Lost Little Girl, She Sells Sanctuary, Rise, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town, Sharp Dressed Man, Born To Kill, Pretty Vacant, Shakin' All Over, Wild Thing.

Comments: Although The Damned often included snippets of other songs in their shows, here they have been listed in amongst their own numbers as they made up a significant portion of the set and in some instances were quite long. It is unclear which numbers made up the main set and which the encores - 'Lust For Life' to 'Neat Neat Neat' may have been part of the main set, or the first encore, and all songs after 'Neat Neat Neat' were certainly played as encore numbers... and seemingly as a single encore.

Comments: This gig was originally listed on this site as at 'Lupo's but has since been amended to 'The Living Room' following correspondence received (it is unclear now where the original location information came from). Additionally, it should be noted that 'Lust For Life' preceded 'New Rose' on the setlist for the night - though it is now unclear as to whether it was actually played on the night.
