The Damned: Live Performances - 1989

The list of Damned shows for 1989 is believed to be complete (lists for some years are very much 'work in progress').

Saturday 23 December 1989 - Academy, Brixton, England, UK

Set: See Her Tonite, I Fall, New Rose, Help, Fan Club, Fish, Born To Kill, Neat Neat Neat, I Feel Alright, Plan 9 Channel 7, Noise Noise Noise, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Smash It Up, Love Song. encore 1 - Turkey Song, Daytripper, Looking At You. encore 2 - The Last Time.

Comments: Another farewell tour 'We Really Must Be Going Now'. Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Brian James, Rat Scabies, Paul Gray. The first 4 personnel played 'See Her Tonite' to 'I Feel Alright', then an on stage changeover saw Brian James leave the stage, Captain Sensible move over to lead guitar, and Paul Gray join on bass, to play 'Plan 9 Channel 7' to 'Love Song'. All 5 band members took part in the 2 encores (with the exception of 'The Turkey Song'). Support from Doctor & The Medics. God & The Kill Crazy Lesbians From Hell were also due to support but did not turn up (idea of their manager to 'build a bit of mystique' according to a former band member).

Comments: Another farewell tour 'We Really Must Be Going Now', featuring Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Brian James, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray - however, this was a 'warm-up' show, at a smaller venue, for the forthcoming nights. All 5 band members took part in the encore.

Friday 13 October 1989 - Royal Holloway College, Egham, England, UK

Set 2: Wait For The Blackout, Noise Noise Noise, Smash It Up, Love Song.

encore - Day Tripper, Looking At You, The Last Time.

Comments: Freshers Ball. Apparently, Then Jericho were intended to play various college and university gigs at this time but withdrew due to a band member being attacked. The Damned were then drafted-in to headline instead and this is the final of the 3 shows where they substituted.Gig billed as the 13th, but Dave Vanian & Rat Scabies played a Naz Nomad gig in Colchester that night and were held up in traffic on the way to Egham - hence The Damned took to the stage around 02:00 on the 14th, which presumably also explains the shorter than normal set for this period.

Comments: Support from God & The Crazy Lesbians From Hell. Apparently, Then Jericho were intended to play various college and university gigs at this time but withdrew due to a band member being attacked. The Damned were then drafted-in to headline instead and this is the second of the 3 shows.

Wednesday 11 October 1989 - The Warehouse, Plymouth, England, UK

Set 1: See Her Tonite, Fish, Born To Kill, Fan Club, I Fall, Neat Neat Neat, Help, New Rose, I Feel Alright.

Set 2: I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Noise Noise Noise, Wait For The Blackout, Smash It Up, Love Song.

encore - The Last Time, Looking At You.

Comments: Apparently, Then Jericho were intended to play this gig, not The Damned. However, Then Jericho withdrew due to a band member being attacked and The Damned were then drafted-in to headline instead. Musical tomfoolery during the show included 'The Sailor's Hornpipe' (prior to 'The Last Time'). Note that the bootleg cassette of this show indicated that the show was at Plymouth Polytechnic - however, this is incorrect, the gig was organised by Plymouth Polytechnic as - their 'Freshers Ball' - but was actually held at The Warehouse.

encore 1 -Day Tripper, Looking At You. encore 2 - The Last Time.

Comments: Last Night of The US farewell tour. A bootleg cassette of this show indicates that the show was on Sunday 30 July. However, Paul Grays online website and other web references say that the gig was on Saturday 29 July and so this is believed to be the correct date. Support from Agony In The Garden. Line-up includes Brian James & Paul Gray. Another show that included much banter. Short snippets of Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love' & Deep Purple's 'Smoke on The Water' were played. First set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Brian James. Second set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray. Encores featured all 5 band members.

encore - Day Tripper, Looking At You, The Last Time.

Comments: US farewell tour. First set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Brian James. Second set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray. The encore featured all 5 band members. There was much banter during this show - various 'ditties' included a country and western number.

Wednesday 26 July 1989 - Celebrity Theatre (Anaheim Convention Centre), Anaheim, California, USA

Set 1: See Her Tonite, Fish, Born To Kill, Fan Club, Help, Neat Neat Neat, I Fall, New Rose, I Feel Alright.

Set 2: I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Hey Joe, Wait For The Blackout, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Love Song, Smash It Up.

encore(s)? - Daytripper, Looking At You, The Last Time.

Comments: US farewell tour. First set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Brian James. Second set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray. It is not possible from the available recording of this concert, to work out whether there was a definite encore break before the final 3 numbers. However, an audience member can clearly be heard saying "Captain Sensible just left the stage butt naked", so it seems likely (as usual for other shows at this time). These last 3 numbers featured all 5 band members.

Monday 24 July 1989 - I-Beam, San Francisco, California, USA

Set 1: See Her Tonite, Fish, Born To Kill, Fan Club, Help, Neat Neat Neat, I Fall, New Rose, I Feel Alright.

Set 2: I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Love Song, Smash It Up.

encore 1 - Daytripper, Looking At You. encore 2 - The Last Time.

Comments: US farewell tour. First set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Brian James. Second set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray. Encores featured all 5 band members.

Saturday 22 July 1989 - Celebrity Theatre, Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Comments: US farewell tour. Support advertised as Human Remains and Housequake. First set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Brian James. Second set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray. Although the cassette that the above song list is taken from finishes with 'Smash It Up', it is assumed that the recording is incomplete and that the normal encores were played, as per other shows of this period, with all 5 band members involved - especially as Dave Vanian can clearly be heard saying "see you later" following 'Smash It Up'.

Thursday 20 July 1989 - Hollywood Palladium, Hollywood, California, USA

Comments: US farewell tour. Support from Smack. Gig known to have taken place.

Second set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray. The encores featured all 5 band members. Captain Sensible stripped off for 'The Last Time'.

Comments: US farewell tour. No support band. First set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Brian James. Second set featured Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray. There is some information to suggest that 'Smash It Up' was followed by the encore numbers 'Daytripper', 'Looking At You', 'Universal Soldier'(?) & 'The Last Time' (presumably involving all 5 band members as per other nights). The soundcheck apparently included 'Baby Please Don't Go', 'Rock N Roll Part 1' and 'Stranger On The Town'.
