The Damned: Live Performances - 2015

The list of shows for 2015 is complete (lists for some years are very much 'work in progress').

Sunday 20 December 2015 - O2 Academy Islington, London

Set: Wait For The Blackout, Fan Club, History Of The World, Grimly Fiendish, Stranger On The Town, Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Eloise, Alone Again Or, Neat Neat Neat, Sanity Clause. encore - Under The Floor Again, New Rose, Nasty, The Turkey Song, Smash It Up, Happy Talk.

Comments: Support from The Featherz (who additionally played the free aftershow). At the beginning of the encore, Monty played a short improvised keyboard piece before the band launched into 'Under The Floor Again'. For 'The Turkey Song', the Damned were joined on stage by Charlie Harper and Gaye Advert. A snippet of 'The Snooker Song' preceded 'Smash It Up'. 'Happy Talk' was a sing-a-long verse between the Captain and the audience (singing and clapping along), with no musical instruments played.

Saturday 19 December 2015 - O2 Academy, Liverpool

Set: Wait For The Blackout, Fan Club, History Of The World, Grimly Fiendish, Stranger On The Town, Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Eloise, Alone Again Or, Neat Neat Neat, Sanity Clause. encore - Under The Floor Again, New Rose, Nasty, The Turkey Song, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from The Featherz. While the Captain tuned his guitar prior to 'The Turkey Song', Monty played a short keyboard improvisation as a filler.

Friday 18 December 2015 - O2 Academy 2, Sheffield

Set: Wait For The Blackout, Fan Club, History Of The World, Grimly Fiendish, Stranger On The Town, Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Eloise, Alone Again Or, Neat Neat Neat, Sanity Clause. encore - Under The Floor Again, New Rose, Nasty, The Turkey Song, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from The Featherz. Between 'Stranger On The Town' and 'Love Song', banter revolved around Paul Weller toilet paper merchandise - with suggestions of 'In The Shitty' and 'Going Underground' being printed. Either side of 'Ignite', on stage tomfoolery saw the band play small reggae snippets, which included short pieces of 'Happy Talk'.

Thursday 17 December 2015 - The Grand, Clitheroe

Set: Wait For The Blackout, Fan Club, History Of The World, Grimly Fiendish, Stranger On The Town, Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Eloise, Alone Again Or, Neat Neat Neat, Sanity Clause. encore - The Turkey Song, Under The Floor Again, New Rose, Nasty, Smash It Up.

Comments: The Great British Alternative Music Festival. The Damned appeared as Saturday headliners on the Centre Stage as part of The Great British Alternative Music Festival weekend. Other acts to play this stage on the night were Dreadzone and Goldblade. Note that Goldblade appeared after The Damned even though they weren't the headline act. The Damned proved by far the most popular band playing the headline slot on the Saturday (Alabama 3 were headlining the 'Reds' stage at the same time) - the queue to get in far exceeding the capacity for the Centre stage... and hence many punters not getting in to see The Damned. The set was played straight through with no encore break. Session drummer Stephen Gilchrist played this show in place of the absent Pinch.

Saturday 26 September 2015 - Northumbria University, Newcastle

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Fan Club, Disco Man, History Of The World, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Smash It Up.

Comments: North East Calling one-day festival. Set played straight through with no encore break. Line-up for the event, and projected stage times was - Hi Fi Spitfires (13:00-13:30), Dogsflesh (13:45-14:15), Fire Exit (14:30-15:00), Restarts (15:15-15:45), Rubella Ballet (16:00-16:30), 999 (16:45-17:15), Anti-Nowhere League (17:30-18:15), Angelic Upstarts (18:30-19:20), The Exploited (19:50-20:50), The Damned (21:20-22:20). Additionally, ticket holders were allowed free access to watch Crashed Out at the 'after show party' upstairs from approximately 22:30. Note that early advertising showed Subhumans NOT Rubella Ballet in the line-up, however, Rubella Ballet were brought in as late replacements for Subhumans due to their guitarist Bruce Treasure having recently undergone heart surgery.

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Lively Arts, Silly Kids Games, History Of The World, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, Alone Again Or, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Nasty, Disco Man, Fan Club, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support 'openers' on the night were The Media Whores, whilst Crashed Out preceded The Damned. A packed venue due to a sold-out show. Excerpts of 'Mull Of Kintyre' and 'Happy Talk' preceded 'Smash It Up.

Saturday 19 September 2015 - Bisley Pavilion

Comments: Undercover III Festival. The Damned headlined the 'Main Stage' on the Saturday of this 3-day festival. Advertised line-up for the Main Stage on the Saturday was Jon Lamb (12:05-12:30), Hazard (13:00-13:30), Kilter (14:00-14:30), R.E.D (15:00-15:30), Headstone Horrors (16:00-16:30), UK Ramones (17:00-17:30), Fighting Evil Is Cool (18:00-18:35), Menace (19:10-19:55), Spizzenergi (20:25-21:15), Chelsea (21:40-22:30), The Damned (23:00-00:30). 'Fan Club' was dedicated to Brian James ("who created all this lunacy") and Bryn Merrick ("who's sadly not with us"). On stage antics prior to 'Smash It Up' included Monty announcing that "tomorrow my sister marries the drummer out of the Johnny Moped Band, in Lewes, [and then jokingly] and you're all invited!"

Friday 18 September 2015 - Copper Rooms, Coventry

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Lively Arts, Silly Kids Games, History Of The World, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, Alone Again Or, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Disco Man, Nasty, Fan Club, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from Louise Distras. Prior to 'Alone Again Or', a period of banter and on-going guitar tuning was eventually broken by Captain Sensible requesting Monty cover for him... and Monty playing a short, random, musical piece on the keyboards. At the beginning of the encore, the Captain invited "any ladies like to come and dance to this song on the stage?" and after some hesitation first one, then another etc made there way to the stage. However, it soon became rather random, with about 5 woman and 3 men (including legendary Damned fan Johnno) on stage for a very lively 'Disco Man'... all watched over by some rather bemused looking security folk. The Captain joked with Johnno following 'Fan Club' and somehow, a short rendition of 'Happy Talk' led by Johnno ensued.prior to 'Smash It Up' (which was dedicated to recently deceased former Damned bassist Bryn Merrick).

Thursday 17 September 2015 - The Live Rooms, Chester

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Lively Arts, Silly Kids Games, History Of The World, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, Alone Again Or, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Disco Man, Fan Club, Nasty, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from Louise Distras. Much mirth at one point of the show was aimed at a chap that kept calling-out for 'Smash It Up' to be played during the early part of the set and continually calling out Captain's name to try to get his attention, culminating, prior to 'Ignite', in Dave Vanian saying something along the lines of "Calm your bubbly emotions madam, for God's sake! He's only a human being... he puts his trousers on one leg at a time, just like you" and another audience member aiming a loud "shut up" towards the individual. 'Nasty' was dedicated to recently deceased former Damned bassist Bryn Merrick. Prior to 'Smash It Up', Captain Sensible held up a newspaper billboard headline that he had 'acquired' during the day and asked "Jury Out In Chester Love Trial... what's that all about? Don't you allow shagging up here?... etc". A member of then audience then loudly explained the judicial case going through court involving a woman accused of tricking her female friend into sex, while disguised as a man, to much amusement both on stage and in the audience.

Wednesday 16 September 2015 - Fibber's, York

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Lively Arts, Silly Kids Games, History Of The World, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, Alone Again Or, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Nasty, Disco Man, Fan Club, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from Louise Distras. Due to the Captain having sound issues after '13th Floor Vendetta', Monty played a short keyboard piece while things were rectified. Similarly, Monty again improvised following 'Eloise' whilst Captain's sound was sorted out. Prior to 'Smash It Up', the song and the set was dedicated to recently deceased former Damned bassist Bryn Merrick.

Sunday 13 September 2015 - Double Door, Chicago, Illinois

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Lively Arts, Silly Kids Games, History Of The World, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, Alone Again Or, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Disco Man, Fan Club, Smash It Up.

Schedule for The Rise stage on the Saturday was - Steve Ignorant and Paranoid Visions (12:40-13:10), GWAR (13:40-14:10), The Damned (14:40-15:25), Pennywise (16:10-16:55), Alexisonfire (17:40-18:40) and Rancid (19:40-20:55). Comments: Support from Dirty Fences and Twin River. Details of the encore are unclear, it is known to have included 'Nasty', 'Wot' (following an audience member shouting out for it) and 'Smash It Up'. However, it is thought to have also included 'Fan Club'... and possibly 'Disco Man'. Any running order for this encore remains unknown.

Sunday 6 September 2015 - Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, California

Comments: Support from C J Ramone. Yet again, The Damned sold-out another show on their US tour. A short piece of 'Happy Talk' was played at the beginning of the encore (an online quote read 'As they got back on stage for the encore, Cap stopped at Monty's keyboard and played and sang a bit of 'Happy Talk'').

Saturday 5 September 2015 - The Fonda Theatre, Los Angeles, California

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Lively Arts, Silly Kids Games, History Of The World, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, Alone Again Or, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Disco Man, Nasty, Fan Club, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from C J Ramone. Another sold-out show that The Damned played in the USA on this tour. A short whimsical piece of 'Mull Of Kintyre' preceded 'Smash It Up' with Pinch then jokingly saying "thankyou, goodnight", and rising as if to leave the drum stool.

Friday 4 September 2015 - House Of Blues, Anaheim, California

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Lively Arts, Silly Kids Games, History Of The World, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, Alone Again Or, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Nasty, Fan Club, I Feel Alright, Smash It Up. [but see comments].

Comments: Support from C J Ramone. The first of a few sold-out shows that The Damned played in the USA on this tour. 'Disco Man' also featured in the encore - but it is unclear where it was played (there are indications 'out there' that suggest it was played prior to 'Smash It Up'... but some sets posted on the web for this tour are known to be incorrect, thus it remains unconfirmed with certainty where in the set it was played. 'Nasty' was preceded by a short rendition of 'This Will Be The Last Time'.

Thursday 3 September 2015 - Sycuan Casino, El Cajon, California

Set: Love Song, Second Time Around, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Lively Arts, Silly Kids Games, History Of The World, 13th Floor Vendetta, Ignite, Stranger On The Town, Eloise, Alone Again Or, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Nasty, Fan Club, Smash It Up. [but see comments].

Comments: No support act on this evening. Though not on the setlist on the night, 'Happy Talk' is known to have been an addition to the actual set played above, however, it is unclear where in the set it was played - the beginniing of the encore would be the usual place to put an addition such as this, but some reports indicate that it may have been played prior to 'New Rose'.

Tuesday 1 September 2015 - Fox 5 News, San Diego, California

Set: Love Song, Neat Neat Neat.

Comments: Not a gig 'as such'… but still a live appearance, The Damned played on the Fox 5 morning news programme in support of their US tour. Only 'Love Song' was broadcast in it's entirety… as the broadcast was cut, the band had just began playing 'Neat Neat Neat' and off camera, a 'mini-mosh' took place between some band members and The Fox 5 News team.

Schedule for The Rock stage on the Saturday was - Souvenirs (12:30-13:00), Bayside (13:30-14:15), GWAR (15:00-15:45), The Damned (16:30-17:30), Thrice (18:30-19:30), Alkaline Trio (20:30-21:30) and Rancid (22:30-23:45). The sound was marred towards the beginning of the set, firstly by Dave Vanian taking a microphone to the stage that was not plugged-in (resulting in no lead vocal towards the start of 'Love Song'), and secondly due to Stu West having equipment problems (his tuner went dead at the start of the set, followed by the amp going silent). The Crew managed to get a sound from it, only for it to die again during 'I Just Can't Be Happy Today'. By sometime during 'Wait For The Blackout', the offending amp was eventually replaced. The Damned's set was played straight through with no encore break.

Comments: Support from Red Raucous (some advertising showed the support as Gravedale High, but this was simply an error). 'Ignite' was greatly drawn-out with on stage banter. Prior to 'Alone Again Or', much banter revolved around the On The Buses TV character 'Blakey', played by actor Stephen Lewis, who passed away aged 88 on 12 August. 'Alone Again Or' was therefore dedicated to Blakey. The band, and Dave Vanian in particular, seemed to have the crowd in the palm of their hands by this part of the show and another song to be greatly drawn-out was 'Eloise' as, for effect, they made the audience wait for the song finale. Comments regarding Cliff Richard after 'Eloise' saw the band play a short rendition of 'Move It'. Improvisation during 'Neat Neat Neat' included some guitar work taken from 'Happy Talk'. The encore began with the Captain stating that the current dates were "our seaside tour of Britain"... to which Dave Vanian broke into a short piece of 'Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside' wiith Pinch accompanying on drums. Captain Sensible took time prior to 'Smash It Up' to 'plug' the intended Damned show at The Royal Albert Hall in May 2016 as part of the The Damned's 40th anniversary celebrations.

Comments: First gig of short 6-night UK tour. Support from Lila J. Prior to 'History Of The World', Monty suggested a dedication to Lorraine Bowen (a recent contestant on the 'Britains Got Talent' TV show) - Captain Sensible picked-up on this and did a shortened first verse of her 'Crumble Song'. Following 'Wot', the Captain played the opening riffs to 'Day Tripper' - Dave Vanian soon joined in, but with the vocals to 'Pretty Woman' and the song soon disintegrated. 'Stretcher Case' was played following a request from within the audience for something off the Music For Pleasure album.

Set: Beauty Of The Beast, Street Of Dreams, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Grimly Fiendish, Plan 9 Channel 7, 13th Floor Vendetta, History Of The World, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Eloise, Under The Floor Again, Limit Club, Shadow Of Love, Neat Neat Neat. encore - Curtain Call, There'll Come A Day, New Rose, Disco Man, Smash It Up.

Comments: Whitby Goth Weekend appearance. Other bands due to perform on the Sunday were William Control, Doctor and The Medics, Pussycat and The Dirty Johnsons. Apparently, Dave Vanian 'fluffed' the lyrics to 'Under The Floor Again'... abandoning them totally and letting Captain Sensible finish the song with the guitar solo. The contributor that provided this information also stated 'a brief rendition of 'Happy Talk' was played during the encore numbers with Dave Vanian doing the guitar bit vocally, and then Captain Sensible doing a very odd song about a chocolate bar'.
