Captain Sensible: Solo & Beyond... (1987)

This listing of appearances by Captain Sensible for 1987 should be considered as 'work in progress'.

* (as) Captain Sensible

Sunday 23 August 1987 - Ashby Ville, Scunthorpe

Set: unknown.

Comments: Scunthorpe Free Rock Festival. Bronski Beat were due to headline this one-day festival but, when they withdrew, Captain Sensible was drafted in to headline instead. Also on the bill - Furniture, The Cleaners From Venus, Diesel Park West, Night Shift and Black Roots.

Saturday 18 July 1987 - Argyle Football Ground, Plymouth

Comments: Plymouth Rock Festival. Planned gig that was seemingly called-off after contractual problems between the promoters and the groups. Early advertising showed the intended line-up as Flesh For Lulu, Steel Pulse, New Order, The Damned, Spear of Destiny, Public Image Ltd and Siouxsie & The Banshees. However, the festival was salvaged with Spear of Destiny, Steel Pulse and The Damned still supposed to be appearing - this also fell through. The gig should have gone ahead with late replacement headliners Black Sabbath (who turned up but refused to play) and Captain Sensible. Apparently the Captain did play - a short set to around 50 people!

Wednesday 10 June 1987 - Arts Centre, Norwich

Set: unknown.

Comments: Red Wedge tour appearance advertised as including Billy Bragg, Rhoda Dakar and Porky The Poet.

Monday 8 June 1987 - Royal Centre, Nottingham

Set: unknown.

Comments: Red Wedge tour appearance advertised as including The Style Council, The Blow Monkeys, Matt Johnson, Billy Bragg, Lorna Gee, Wendy May, Porky The Poet and special guests.

Friday 5 June 1987 - Civil Hall, Wolverhampton

Set: I Get So Excited, Neat Neat Neat, Revolution Now, Love Song, Glad It's All Over, Smash It Up (part 2 only).

Comments: Red Wedge tour appearance with UK Chalice, Rankin Ann, Spies In The House Of love and Billy Bragg. Captain Sensible also contributed to the encores with other Red Wedge members.

Thursday 4 June 1987 - Perdiswell Sports Centre, Worcester

Set included: Neat Neat Neat, Love Song, Smash It Up.

Comments: Red Wedge tour appearance with The Hank Wangford Band, Porky The Poet (as compere?) and The Men They Couldn't Hang. It is unclear whether the 3 numbers shown for the set were the whole set or only a part of it.

Wednesday 6 May 1987 - The Waterside Inn, Bury

Set included: Hippy Hippy Shake.

Comments: Gig confirmed as having taken place. For 'Hippy Hippy Shake', Graham the guitarist handed his guitar to fan, Chris Moon, who played the song.

NOTE: This is likely a date error for the 3 March show.

xx May 1987 - Taylor's Wine Bar, Shoreditch

Set: unknown.

NOTE: This is likely a date error because it was supposedly just days before The Waterside Inn gig (which now appears to have been on 6 March).

Friday 6 March 1987 - The Waterside Inn, Kay Bridge, Summerseat

Set: unknown.

Comments: Support advertised as The Steve Maddox Band.
