Captain Sensible: Solo & Beyond... (1990)

This listing of appearances by Captain Sensible for 1990 should be considered as 'work in progress'.

* (as) Captain Sensible

Tuesday 18 December 1990 - Burberries, Birmingham

Set: unknown.

Comments: Show known to have taken place. A contributor to this site stated - 'I remember him [the Captain] taking off all his clothes towards the end and writhing around on the floor with some poor woman from the audience.

Saturday 15 December 1990 - Stirling University

Set: em>unknown.

Comments: Show by 'Captain Sensible and The Family Butcher'. Gig known to have taken place.

Friday 14 December 1990 - Glasgow College of Technology

Set: New Rose, Revolution Now, Glad It's All Over, Looking At You, Neat Neat Neat, Daytripper, Smash It Up, Love Song. encore (assumed) - Anarchy In The UK.

Comments: Apparently, Captain Sensible came on stage after 02:00 on the 15th! An improvised blues piece with non-sensical lyrics, lasting aproximately 5 minutes, preceded 'Love Song'. The assumed encore (there was a gap in the recording so it seems likely that  there was an encore break at this point), began with someone throwing a blow-up doll on stage and Captain Sensible intimating that it was Toyah... then discussing the 'merits' [ahem] of Toyah. A rant at the glass throwers in the audience followed before 'Anarchy In The UK'.

Sunday 9 December 1990 - The Academy, Plymouth

Comments: Billed as Captain Sensible & The Family Butcher. Advertised support was 'Watershed'. A contributor to this site has advised that this gig was CANCELLED and rescheduled for 17 January 1991.

Saturday 8 December 1990 - Brunel University, Uxbridge

Set: New Rose, A Riot On Eastbourne Pier, Exploding Heads And Teapots, Revolution Now, Glad It's All Over, Looking At You, Happy Talk, Neat Neat Neat, Daytripper. encore - Anarchy In The UK, Smash It Up (parts 1 and 2).

Comments: The Academy at Brunel presents 'The 1990 Christmas Ball'. Advertising seems to have indicated Captain Sensible & The Family Butcher. A fairly chaotic show, which included a musical rant about The Pope and other leading figures of the day during 'Happy Talk', and excerpts of 'Ride On Time' [by Black Box] finishing 'Neat Neat Neat'. From Sounds of 5 January 1991 - 'Unfortunately, main attractions That Petrol Emotion fell victims to the snow, so Sensible returned a couple of hours later for a horrendous run through of old standards like Stairway To Heaven'.

Friday 7 December 1990 - Treforest Polytechnic of Wales

Set: unknown.

Comments: Show by 'Captain Sensible and The Family Butcher'.  Gig known to have taken place.

Friday 2 November 1990 - Jazzhaus, Freiburg, Germany

Set: unknown.

Monday 15 October 1990 - TJ's, Newport

Set: unknown.

Monday 27 August 1990 - Smallbrook Stadium, Ryde, Isle of Wight

Set: unknown.

Comments: Advertised as '20th Anniversary Clebration of the Isle of Wight Festival', this was an early attempt at re-launching the Isle of Wight Festival. Artisets advertised to appear included Boy George, Captain Sensible, Audience, Pete Brown Group, Volker Cat, Clear Blue Sky, Julie Felix, John Fiedler, The Groundhogs, John Richardson, Dick Taylor and Friends, and The Third Ear Band.

Wednesday 4 July 1990 - Venue, Oxford

Set: New Rose, A Riot On Eastbourne Pier, Exploding Heads & Teapots, Revolution Now, Glad It`s All Over, Looking At You, The Coward Of Treason Cove, Neat Neat Neat, Daytripper, Smash It Up (parts 1 and 2), Love Song, Ballroom Blitz.

Comments: Some advertising for this gig showed 'Captain Sensible & The Doomed. The bootleg recording that the set above was taken from has some breaks in the audio, so it is unclear where the encore break(s) occurred - it is assumed from the audio that there was an encore break between 'Daytripper' and 'Smash It Up', and possibly also between 'Love Song' and 'Ballroom Blitz'. Incidently, 'Ballroom Blitz' can best be described as 'like a car crash' - being attempted 3 times due to microphone issues and also band members not being proficient in playing the song.

Saturday 26 May 1990 - Seafront, Brighton

Set: unknown.

Comments: A festival was held to support the dolphins inside Brighton's Dolpinarium. Julian Cope (under the ego Mr Swqubbsy), The Inspiral Carpets and Captain Sensible appeared, though whether it included a musical performance by the Captain is unclear.

April 1990 - The New Moon, Paris, France

Comments: Captain Sensible supposedly had a one week residency at The New Moon with TV Smith's band 'Cheap' and possibly Martin Newell. 23 and 24 April were two of the dates.
